Bonescon 2018

Friday 16th February 2018.  Its 6am and I am waiting outside Matts house to drive to Birmingham from the first day of Bonescon.  As he lurches across the lawn like some sort of demented Quasimodo I tell him that if I ever suggest doing anything like this again then he should punch me in the throat.  Well I guess I’m going to end up with a crushed trachea because Bonescon 2018 was excellent fun and we will definitely be back in 2019

For me the weekend felt like the final cathartic release after the failure of Daffcon and the Butterfly House was definitely the spiritual successor to that event.  A place where you could come, hang out and get away from the hustle and bustle of the more competitive gaming spaces to just put some toy soldiers down on a table top and push models around whilst chatting away to old friends.  Over the weekend we had people playing Dead Mans Hand, Frostgrave, OGAM, Dragon Rampant and Open Combat and all seemed to be enjoying themselves – they certainly knew the rules better than I did.

Paranoid Miniatures ran demo after demo of Mythos and Gaslands was Uber (car joke there somewhere) busy from the get go. The lovely Gav Thorpe came as well, hanging out, swapping stories with people and giving demos of Big Stompy Robots.  I shall say nothing about how my demo of it went other than to say, four BSRs entered and only 1 left.  So suck it losers 🙂

As many people predicted (I hate how well people know me sometimes) I didn’t get the 7TV game finished (one day) so we ran plenty of Zombie Run instead.  Indeed it was how much fun that proved to be that helped convince Matt that we will be back next time as he started to plan Zombie Run II.  Bigger, Better and just generally more dead things.

Which brings us nicely to next year.  As I write its still slightly up in the air if there will be a Bonescon 2019, but I’m pretty sure that if enough people say nice things to Jon it will run again and I didn’t hear a bad word about the event over the 3 days – hotel certainly should have been happy with us given the amount of booze we ran them out of.

Out plan for the Butterfly House is to take the whole chillax and push some toy soldiers around concept to the next level.  So no fixed gaming schedule but instead a shelf full of games along with the figures needed to play them.  Fancy a game of the excellent Burrows and Badgers you have heard about.  Take the box off the shelf – it contains rules, figures, dice etc. – find yourself a table and start playing.  Think board-game cafe but with miniature games instead – oh and two ageing fat men rather than a couple of hipsters.

We are also keen to incorporate other games in to the space as well so are thinking of running RPG one shots over the weekend.  If we do I will definitely be running a Paranoia one.

Participation games will remain, as I said above Zombie Run II will be a thing and we are also going to do a classic hack and slash dungeon crawl game.  How much treasure can you find before you have to escape.

Finally I hope that we will expand the number of smaller manufacturers that will come and hang out with us.   Gaslands and Paranoid have already said they will be back but I’d love to add a few more – Oathsworn I am looking at you.

With that, love and peace to you all, thanks for coming along and seeing us and making it a great weekend.  Here’s to the Butterfly House, long may it continue.

I expect you to die Mr Bond

I’ve been getting very excited this week about 7TV, inspired by the participation game that we are going to be running at Bonescon in February 2018 (tickets available now)

For those of you who don’t know 7TV describes itself as Inch High Spy Fi and is a game that enables you to basically play in the universes shown in TV shows such as Man from UNCLE and The Avengers.  Ever wanted to be James Bond or Our Man Flint?  Then this is the game for you.  Its in its second edition and its one of my favourite games that I never get to play, though I’m not sure why as whenever we do play it we always have a great time.

Anyway I’ve long wanted to do a dungeon crawl type game using the mechanics so the idea of doing a participation game where I can introduce people to the game has long been bopping around at the back of my head and this week I have started to make it into a reality.

First I’ve built a sewer board using bits from the Terrain Shed Labyrinth range.  This is one of 3 boards that the game will be played on (the other two are going to be the evil villain lair and a pretty standard town type layout) IMG_0421.JPG

This will be one of the potential starting points for our groups of superspies as they head out to deal with whatever mission they have been sent on.  It will be populated with security robots as well as the odd abandoned genetic experiment (or three)

As well as building this out I’ve also started working on the various casts of heros that players will be able to use.  At the moment I’m thinking there will be four different groups representing Britain, USA, Russian and some undefined Pan Asian conglomeration (got to get ninjas in somewhere).   Of course being a 60’s based show each of these organisations has to have a snappy acronym so I took to Twitter to see what my followers could come up with.  After I had filtered out all the sexual ones (amazing the acronyms people can come up with) I’ve so far got these

  • T.O.P.H.A.T – The Organisation Preventing Harm And Terror
  • S.I.C.K.L.E – Society for the Improvement of Communist Kulture via Liquidation and Espionage
  • L.A.S.S.O – League Against Sinister State Organisations

The final one is currently called DRAGON but haven’t managed to turn it into a cool acronym yet.  Suggestions on a postcard to ….

Some SICKLE agents

I may also have bought hats for the players to wear.  Hey if you are going to go for it, really go for it.

So go buy your Bonescon tickets (did I mention there is a 10% early bird discount for September) and I’ll see you in the Butterfly House.

Butterfly House Update

A quick update on where we are with the Fools Daily Butterfly House (FDBH) event that is going to be running at Bonescon in February 2018.

Tickets for Bonescon will be going on sale very soon and it seemed like an opportune time to give you a preview of what the schedule is going to roughly look like.  Now this is still slightly in flux ad hopefully we will be adding more things for you to do and play but at the moment we have this:

Friday

  • Dead Mans Hand Campaign event (loaner crews available)
  • 7TV Participation Game, everything provided, play for 30 minutes or all day
  • Frostgrave campaign event (loaner crews available)

In the evening we should be running playtests of the first Fools Daily game, Monster Smash

Saturday

  • Gaslands Campaign / Tournament (Details TBA)
  • Dragon Rampant Campaign event (loaner armies available)
  • Moonstone Event (Details TBA)

In the evening we will be running our Zombie Run game.  How far can you get?

Sunday

  • Of Gods and Mortals Campaign Event (loaner armies armies available)
  • Open Combat Campaign Event (Details TBA)
  • Mythos Event (Details TBA)

Over the weekend there will be participation games of Gaslands, Mythos and with a bit of luck Big Stompy Robots!

When you purchase a ticket  you are buying an entry ticket to the whole weekend, and this enables you to sign up for one seat in any event. Everything else is then filled up by sign ups on the day.  You can do anything anywhere with any ticket (as long as there is space in the event of course).

So feel free to play Warmachine, Malifaux or indeed any of the other games that are being organised, but it would be great if you could stop by the Butterfly House for a little while as getting folks playing games at the tables will help us ensure that the idea has a future and of course if there is something that you would like to see, just let us know and we will see what we can do (DC Miniatures Game????)

Will update with ticket info when I have it.

Episode 341 – Its life Jim, but not as we know it.

In which Mike and Matt talk about Bonescon and specifically the plans for the Fools Daily Butterfly House. Before we get there though we wander through SAGA, a trip to Warhammer World and a brief discussion about monochrome painting techniques. Polyglots, that what we are. Must admit I am very excited about the Butterfly House and hopefully if you are a regular listener to this show you are as well. Fun and Frolics will abound as a shining beacon of hope in the mass of competative gaming. Or it will be an utter disaster and Matt and I will be sitting twiddling our thumbs for 3 days. Either way its going to be exciting.

From the ashes

There is something stirring in the warp.  Oh wait, hold on, thats a completely different blog post.  Right lets start again.

OK so regular Fools Daily consumers* will know about Daffcon, the multi system convention that we ran in 2016 and then tried and failed to run in 2017.  If you don’t then you can listen to a podcast about it.

What you might not remember is that several years ago Smogcon (big Warmachine event) had included other systems as an experiment and I ran 3 days of Malifaux.  Indeed, the fact that Smogcon moved to be a Privateer Press event only was the genesis for my ‘Festival of Gaming’ idea that turned into Daffcon.

Well in 2018 the old organiser of Smogcon, Jon Webb,  is going back to the multi system format with a new event called Bonescon and we’ve been lucky enough to secure some space there.  In fact Jon have been very generous and allocated us 20 4×4 tables, which conveniently turns into 16 6×4.

Enter the Fools Daily Butterfly House (and I have in no way been looking on eBay for plastic butterflies to decorate the place, cause that would just be silly and we don’t do silly at Fools Daily)

Basically for the 3 days of the convention (16-18th Feb 2018) we will be running a mixture of campaign events (Dragon Rampant, Frostgrave, OGAM etc.), participation games (everything provided, you just turn up and play for 5 minutes or 5 hours), competitions (Zombie Run!) and hosted events (Mythos, Gaslands and Open Combat for instance).

Current thinking (which of course is subject to change) is that we will open the Butterfly House at around lunchtime each day, so that folks can get another event in as well and then just stay open until late for evening gaming fun.  If the demand is there we will of course open longer but I’m just not sure how many people will come to Smogcon just to hang out in the Butterfly house rather than using it as an adjunct to other games that they are wanting to play.

You can find out more details about Bonescon here and make sure you follow them on Facebook / Twitter etc.

Hope to see you there in 2018, I must admit I am very excited by the prospects

*I was going to write listeners and then thought do I have to make it listeners / readers, consumers seems to cover all bases, after all one day we might have video content as well
